UNDERSTANDING ROTARY
The following is an extract from RI President Kalyan’s message in the February
issue of Rotarian magazine: -
“Why have we been so successful in our work to eradicate polio? Because Rotary is able to go where no government and few other nongovernmental organisations can into homes, into schools and into communities, with the trust and confidence of the people we serve. When we in Rotary work for peace, we don’t do it by negotiating treaties or demonstrating in the streets. Instead, we build by example – by working together, whatever our nationality or background, and putting others’ needs above our own.
We build peace by dealing with the problems that disrupt people’s ability to live
normal, peaceful lives – whether those problems are a lack of water, or sanitation,
or safe, affordable housing; whether they stem from a shortage of education or
health care, or a need to build productive and positive connections between
communities. In everything we do, we rely on our good name.
This is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good name is indeed
known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk about Rotary – letting
the world know about the work we are doing, the differences we are making and the
benchmarks we are setting. Our work speaks to our belief that a better, more
peaceful world is possible, and we need to be sure that our voices are heard.”
I make no apology for quoting this article so extensively. The message contained
therein must be spread as widely as possible, and only we Rotarians can do this!

friends of these former Rotarians, and to the members of the five Clubs.
OBITUARY
I do not normally include obituaries in my Newsletter, and do not propose to make a
habit of it. However, for the benefit of his many friends throughout District, I
thought it appropriate to give a wider audience the benefit of the Obituary for
PDG Vernon Schwarz which appeared in the West Wirral Bulletin which read as
Follows: -
IN MEMORIAM
VERNON SCHWARZ
1947-
Vernon grew up in Bristol. After school he read mathematics at Birmingham University and subsequently made his career in teaching. During his time in Birmingham he met
his future wife Jenny who was studying for a degree in physics; they were married in 1972. Vernon had a distinguished career in secondary education. His first post was at Wallasey Grammar School for Boys. Subsequently he taught in Mold and Meols; in1982 he became Deputy Head at Pensby Boys. Finally in 1990 he became Head of St George of England High School in Bootle until his retirement in 2006. Vernon taught
many pupils to play rugby football. He also became an outstanding referee and for a period he was one of the country’s top ten referees. In addition to his job in Bootle he took on many other roles within the Sefton community and also served on the North West Regional Committee of the Community Fund, concerned with the distribution of National Lottery monies.
In 1986 Vernon was one of the Founder Members of West Wirral RC and was President in 1990/91. In 2008/09 he was Distinct Governor. Vernon was inspirational in
championing the needs and aspirations of young and disadvantaged people in the local
community and for Rotary. He was Vice-
His wife Jenny enthusiastically shared his charitable work. In 2010 and 2011 they
visited Lucknow in India to help with ‘Polio Plus’ campaign and, among other things,
took with them school items that had been collected by the pupils of Meadowside.
Sadly, Wirral is poorer by the passing of this outstanding member of our community. Our sympathies go to his wife Jenny and his godchildren.
TRAVELS AROUND DISTRICT
Since my last Newsletter I have made official visits to Ormskirk, Wallasey, North
Wirral, Southport Meols, South Sefton, Royden Revolve, Welshpool and Saughall
Clubs. All these Clubs are in good health and working hard to achieve their aims
and objectives for the current Rotary year.
I also attended the Charter celebrations of Ellesmere Port and Rhos on Sea Clubs
and a meeting of the Governors’ Committee. I was also scheduled to attend West
Derby’s Burns Night but had to call off the day before due to a heavy cold.
Fortunately, I then had four clear days to recover before my next engagement.
I would remind all Presidents and Secretaries that I am required to make an
Official Visit to all Clubs during my year of Office.
Although there are still 6 Clubs who have not yet arranged a date for my visit,
three of these have been in touch and I anticipate arranging a suitable date with
them in the next few days. I am still waiting to hear from Flint & Holywell,
Liverpool Exchange and Llanidloes and I would appreciate an early e-
these Clubs to suggest a couple of suitable dates, preferably at Business Meetings,
for my visit. Any Club which has not contacted me by the end of January will be
told the date I propose to visit them, whether or not it is convenient to the Club
