Our Achievements in Excellence

Awards We Have Given

Over the last 4 school years, The Rotary Club of Abergele has introduced the Rotary Junior Community Award to two schools in Abergele; Ysgol Glan Morfa and St Elfod, and another junior school Ysgol Bryn Garth in Pen-y-Ffordd, Holywell. The award is designed to give children in year 6 new skills and at the same time an appreciation of how they could use those skills to benefit both themselves and the local community. Abergele Rotary Club is delighted to announce that 23 children in all completed the award over the last year and have each been presented with a medal, certificate and gift. Presentation day at each school was on the 18th July and all at about the same time, a challenge for the president to be in three places at one time, Kevin was able to make the presentations himself to pupils at both Elfod and Glan Morfa and he was assisted by past president Rtn. Clive Thomas, who made the presentations at

Ysgol Pen-y-Ffordd Holywell.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION2005-06

ON TUESDAY 6TH JUNE MEMBERS OF THE ABERGELE ROTARY CLUB WERE SURPRISED WHEN THE MEETING WAS INTERRUPTED BY THE PREVIOUSLY UNANNOUNCED VISIT OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR RTN. GEOFF UTTLEY. THE SURPRISE SOON TURNED TO DELIGHT WHEN HE EXPLAINED THAT HIS VISIT WAS TO ADVISE THE MEMBERSHIP THAT THE ABERGELE ROTARY CLUB HAD BEEN AWARDED THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION

BY THE PRESIDENT OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CARL-WILHELM STENHAMMAR,

IN RECOGNITION OF THE COMMITMENT THEY HAD SHOWN TO THE ROTARY IDEAL OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF. AND THAT IT WAS "HIS PLEASURE TO PRESENT THE AWARD TO THE ABERGELE CLUB PRESIDENT.RTN.MIKE MASON."

THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR WENT ON TO SAY THAT

"MANY CLUBS IN THE DISTRICT HAD HOPED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE AWARD, BUT IN THE END ONLY SEVEN HAD ACHIEVED THE CITATION."

THEN HE UPDATED THE CLUB ON THE JAVA EARTH QUAKE APPEAL SAYING THAT "HE HAD BEEN VERY PLEASED WITH THE SWIFT RESPONSE THE CLUB HAD MADE TO THE R.I.B.I APPEAL". AND ADVISED "THE TWO EMERGENCY SHELTER BOXES THAT THE CLUB FUNDED HAD PROVIDED ACCOMMODATION FOR 40 VICTIMS. AS COMPARED TO THE 20, THE CLUB HAD ASSUMED." .

SHELTERBOX HAD PACKED SPECIAL BOXES FOR JAVA, BECAUSE OF THEIR ARM CLIMATE, THEY OMITTED 10 SLEEPING BAGS FROM EACH BOX , WHICH MADE SPACE FOR A SECOND 10 PERSON TENT TO BE INCLUDED. 200 SHELTER BOXES CONTAINING 400 TENTS, WERE PACKED ON MONDAY MAY 29TH.. A FURTHER 200 BOXES WITH 400 TENTS WERE DESPATCHED THE NEXT DAY AND ON THEIR WAY VIA HEATHROW THE SAME EVENING.

SINCE THEN A TEAM FROM THE UK HAS ARRIVED IN THE AFFECTED AREA AND IS TRAVELLING, WORKING WITH LOCAL ROTARIANS, AND THEIR DISTRICT GOVERNOR, TO ENSURE SPEEDY DISTRIBUTION OF THE TENTS, TO THE HOMELESS. "THIS WAS A "A REALLY SUPERB RESPONSE FROM CLUBS OF R.I.B.I , WHO WILL HAVE PROVIDED SHELTER FOR 8,000 HOMELESS VICTIMS WITHIN DAYS OF THE APPEAL."

Welcome To The Abergele Rotary Club
